When two lofts occupy one number on firm August greens
Carry shrinks after a thaw. Then July bent bakes and the ball runs. A 52 and a strong pitching iron start doing the same job. The bag did not shrink. The surfaces did.
Halina keeps a small book of collisions. Not names — numbers. A 46-degree pitching iron that still carries 125 on a wet April morning and a 52 that also carries 125 because the thaw killed spin. A 48 that jumps to 130 on baked August bent while the 52, sitting too much camber, hops and goes 128. Those pairs are the same person standing in Suite 5 asking why they have two clubs for one hole. The answer is almost never “buy a 50 from a catalog.” The answer is: which liar do we recut, and do we recut loft, camber, or both.
We stain the pitching iron and the gap on the same visit. If the iron is already honest — repeatable stain, known number — we leave it alone. Catalogs love even gaps. Buffalo does not owe you even gaps. If the 52 is the one hopping on firm bent, we flatten crown and, if needed, add a degree of loft so it stops sharing the iron’s job. If the 52 is the one diving in a thaw, we add crown and may take loft off so carry comes back without turning it into a third pitching iron.
Yardages go on the sheet in metres and yards because this room argues in both. The number that matters is the one that survives the week you play, not the indoor net you rented in November. Indoor nets lie about turf. They also lie about how much a baked green will add after the ball lands. We cannot copy a green in a downtown suite. We can copy the lie before the ball is in the air, and we can ask you how far the ball ran last Sunday. That run-out is part of the collision.
People want a chart. We have a ledger of sits, not a chart of lofts. A full freeze bag — 52 / 56 / 60 plus the gap check — exists because the collision often lives next to a sand club that still has Florida camber. Fixing only the 52 while the 56 is a shovel just moves the argument down the bag. Ice pair is the cheaper version when two heads are at war and the lob can wait.
Priya on Elmwood wrote that her gap and pitching iron became the same club after a wet April, and that she still plays the same head. That is the point. We are not a store. We recut what you already walk with. If the chrome is too thin or the heat history is unknown, we refuse and you can buy metal elsewhere. If the geometry is honest, the head stays in the bag with a new job.
A last local tell: league night on a baked municipal in late July is not the same number as a Saturday after a Thursday thunderstorm. If you only send us the league number, we will sit for pavement and the thunderstorm will look like a stranger. Tell both. The sheet has room. The harbor clock has room, Thursday through Monday, for you to come back when the season flips.
If the collision is actually a motion problem — stains all over the plate — we stop. Lesson or grind is a boundary we keep. Grinding loft onto a lunge is how you buy a new problem. The wheel is not a teacher.
